Looking at the DOM docs, there is no mention of a background field, just a bgColour:

readonly attribute long cellIndex;
attribute DOMString abbr;
attribute DOMString align;
attribute DOMString axis;
attribute DOMString bgColor;
attribute DOMString ...

is it possible to change this with mouse events?
