It doesn't work !
Once you click on the link, the page stops loading.
My problems is with links and not images, but the problem is the same.
I'm trying to prevent the user to click on a link in the top of my page to an anchor at the bottom that wasn't loaded yet.
Once he clicks on the link, even if it's a CheckFirst link - the page stops loading - Netscape 4.73
