It is a bit of trouble, but I'll send you the code if you'd like to see it -- you can (in code) create a layer with a clear image sized and positioned where the original image is and, since you are building it on the fly, you can set the alt text. Also, since you are building it on the fly, you can change alt text by rewriting the layer.
