Breakout (or Arkanoid, as a more advanced version was called) is a classic arcade game from the mid-80's.

How To Play

You control a bat (or 'paddle') at the bottom of the screen, bouncing a ball off it and up towards a series of brick rows at the top. The aim is to hit, and destroy, all the bricks to progress onto the next level.

The game can be made as easy or as complicated as you wish - some bricks may have to be hit more than once, they may be in irregular shapes, or even advancing down the screen (like Space Invaders). You could implement any number of powerups, which are released by certain bricks and drift downwards, to be collected on the bat. You may also like to create a 2-player version - the scope is up to you.

More information about Breakout can be found, for example, by searching AltaVista. Information on Arkanoid and some example graphics can be found at the Retrocade site.
