The DOS version of pkzip 2.04g is free. Also, as the format of the compressed file was made available, you can also download tools for other platforms. eg. zip for unix, also free.

It's up to a user whether they want to part with money for the GUI that winzip provides.

: WinZip has a nice feature, that makes the compressed file a .exe file, and thus the need for client access to WinZip dissappears.

But portability with other platforms dissapears too.
