You can just use span for any of these mouse events. Onmouseover, onkeypress, onclick, any of them. Just put a javascript to activate on whatever type of event you want.
To demonstrate:
This is some text outside - <span onclick="javascript:alert('I love DHTML')">this is inside the span</span> - and this is more text outside
