Let there be no doubt, that PNG offers some great things, that neither JPG or GIF has.

The major difference between CSS & PNG, is that while CSS was introduced with IE3, pictures were introduced with Mosaic.

When you use .png you may loose functionality, if your browser does not support .png (e.g. imagemaps, pictures as links)

When you use .css you'll only have a page that looks different, but with the same functionality.

Are you willing to sacrifice functionality and cut of browsers all the way back to Mosaic, in order to use a better picture format?
