The PNG format can be viewed as a substitution for the GIF format (and JPG in certain situations), but you can do things that you can't with former formats, so a PNG graphic is not a simple substitute of a GIF file, but an improvement. So, I think you mustn't go backward to Mosaic to stablish a point of rupture.

By the way, Mosaic doesn't support animated GIFs; is this an example of loss of functionality?

I think that the time for PNG is not yet here, but we must try to stay at the edge, as we do with CSS and HTML4, and any other Internet Related Technologies ;).
